Distance: 97 KM

From Perth, follow the Great Eastern Highway for approximately 45 minutes to reach your first stop at Mundaring in the Darling Ranges. Home to Western Australia’s first conservation area, John Forrest National Park, it offers the perfect spot to stretch your legs while taking in striking granite outcrops and waterfalls.

Head further along Great Eastern Highway for another three quarters of an hour to arrive at the grand heritage town of York. Established in 1831, much of its Victorian and Federation architecture has been lovingly restored to house galleries, museums, cafes, restaurants and antique shops.


John Forrest National Park is one of Australia's oldest conservation areas and WA's first national park proclaimed in 1900. The visitor area contains bbq & picnic facilities.

York is the oldest inland town in Western Australia, situated on the Avon River, 97 kilometres east of Perth in the Wheatbelt, on Ballardong Nyoongar land.

Leg 2. York to Northam

Distance 36km

A short drive to Northam. Head into the town centre of Northam for brunch at a cafe or restaurant or grab a picnic breakfast to have by the river at the end of 41 Mile Road. Here, you can cross Northam's pedestrian suspension bridge (the longest of its kind in Australia) and photograph the nation’s only flock of white swans.

Rise bright and early for a majestic hot air balloon ride over the Avon Valley as dawn breaks, before a gourmet champagne breakfast (pre-booking is essential).

Leg 3. Northam to Toodyay & New Norcia

Distance: 106km

Just a 20-minute drive west of Northam is Toodyay - where heritage architecture offers an insight into life in the early convict era, as well as local arts and crafts, fresh produce, wines and beautiful country gardens.

From Toodyay, join the Great Northern Highway to reach New Norcia.

New Norcia is home to a Benedictine Monastery, it's Australia's only monastic town where monks have been living a simple communal life since 1847.

Visitors are welcome to join the monks in residence at prayer times, and to take a tour of the Spanish architecture and museum. Be sure to indulge in the monastery’s famous baked goods.

Leg 4. New Norcia to the Chittering Valley

Distance: 63km

The Chittering Valley is nestled in the northern hills of the Darling Range within the beautiful Avon Valley region. With its untouched bushland and wetlands, vineyards, orchards, spectacular wildflowers and views, the area is a perfect day or short-break destination.

Leg 5. Chittering Valley, Swan Valley to Perth

Distance: 64km

Call in for  lunch at one of the many amazing wineries, restaurants or cafes. But be sure to leave room for some gourmet local delights, from olives, cheeses and preserves to chocolate, nougat and ice creams.
